Same-sex Attraction

Through Jesus' all-encompassing love, we can help provide the peace and clarity you seek.

If you struggle with same sex attraction or related feelings, you’re not alone. More importantly, the Archdiocese of Omaha provides a place of sanctuary where you can share your thoughts and emotions, and begin your journey towards greater peace of mind. That’s where our Courage EnCourage program offers help—for both you and your family or friends. So take that first leap. We’ll be here to accept you, listen to you and help you—at your own pace, in a welcoming atmosphere.

Courage EnCourage is not a program to change a person’s sexual attraction. Instead, it’s a ministry of spiritual support made of two components: Courage is an approved apostolate of the Roman Catholic Church offering assistance to those who harbor feelings of same sex attraction. EnCourage is a related ministry dedicated to the spiritual needs of parents, siblings, children, other relatives and friends of persons with same-sex attraction.

Endorsed by the Pontifical Council for the Family, the local chapter of the national Courage EnCourage offers love and support in both individual and group settings for those who desire to live chaste lives in accordance with the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.

What Does the Church Say?

“Today, the Church provides a badly needed context for the care of the human person when she refuses to consider the person a ‘heterosexual’ or a ‘homosexual’ and insists that every person has a fundamental identity: a creature of God, and by grace, His child and heir to eternal life.”

Courage and EnCourage

Courage was founded in 1980 to help Catholics with same-sex attraction live chaste lives in accordance with the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching. EnCourage is a support group for family members, spouses and friends of men and women with same-sex attraction.

Courage and EnCourage are built on three pillars: a support group system, fellowship and the development of authentic and solid Catholic spirituality. Courage and EnCourage believe:

  • With human support and Divine Intervention, persons with same-sex attraction can follow Jesus Christ according to Roman Catholic spiritual and moral teaching
  • It’s possible to have same-sex attraction and live a chaste and productive life
  • Homosexual attractions or feelings are not sin, however, homosexual acts are immoral and do not lead to a deeper life in Christ
  • A person’s dignity does not depend on his/her sexual attractions, but rather on his/her relationship with Jesus Christ
  • Homosexual desires are not usually a person’s choice
  • Therapy may address underlying emotional issues related to same-sex attraction, however, therapy cannot guarantee it will be eliminated

Courage support has the following goals:

  • To live chaste lives in accordance with the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching on homosexuality
  • To dedicate our lives to Christ through service to others, spiritual reading, prayer, meditation, individual spiritual direction, frequent attendance at Mass and frequent reception of the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist
  • To foster a spirit of fellowship in which we may share with one another our thoughts and experiences and so ensure none of us has to face the problems of homosexuality alone
  • To be mindful of the truth that chaste friendships are not only possible, but necessary and to encourage one another in forming and sustaining these friendships
  • To live lives that may serve as good examples, role models to others

EnCourage members support each other and loved ones through discussion, prayer, fellowship and sacrifice. EnCourage offers faithful witness to Catholic teaching on sexual morality while meeting the needs of members with charity and compassion.

Move beyond the confines of the homosexual label to a more complete identity in Christ
