What if the worst thing you think could happen does and you are widowed, separated or divorced? How do you cope with the grief, loss and pain?

No one should suffer alone, and although life may never be the same, it can be good again. The Center for Family Life Formation offers several sessions and events that help families cope with loss.

Grieving with Great Hope

A 5 week program, grounded in the Catholic faith for those mourning the death of a loved one. If you have lost a spouse, a child (including a pregnancy loss), a grandchild, a parent, another family member or a friend, you are encouraged to attend.

Coping with Life Alone

Coping with Life Alone is a six-week series designed to help individuals work through the trauma of losing their spouse, whether by divorce, separation or death. 

The program follows a specific topic each week, consisting of a presentation, reflection time and small group discussion. A trained group of men and women who themselves are either divorced, separated or widowed lead all sessions. 

Weekly topics include:

  • Dealing with being alone, loneliness and stress
  • Coping with grief
  • Discovering and trusting yourself
  • Dealing with your former spouse or the memory of your deceased spouse
  • Accepting changes in your relationship with others and your social activities
  • Growth through divorce, separation or death

Cost: $25 donation suggested, includes six sessions; no one will be excluded because of an inability to donate.

Beginning Experience Weekend

The Beginning Experience Weekend is a weekend retreat for adults who are divorced, widowed or legally separated. The retreat is designed to be a time to heal and a time to turn the pain of loss into an experience of grace. Separated, divorced and widowed persons will re-evaluate themselves and their lives and look into the future with renewed hope.

The Beginning Experience Weekend is for people who have worked through the initial stages of grief (anger, despair and rejection) and for those who have found themselves stuck at a point in their single life. Recommended time from the loss before a weekend is one year for the widowed and six months for the divorced or legally separated. 

Cost: $100 for a semi-private sleeping room or $125 for a private sleeping room; includes registration fee sent with application. Financial arrangements can be made – no one will be excluded due to financial difficulties.

Into the Father’s Hands

Into the Father’s Hands© offers an umbrella of support in line with Church teaching and tradition that assists the faithful in preparing for their own death and for times when their lives are impacted by the death of loved ones. Materials help individuals and parishes plan for the Rite of Christian Funerals and burials. Individuals and parishes may purchase planning guides individually or in bulk from the Center for Family Life Formation.
